Features FrontPage 2002 FrontPage 2003
Access cross-browser DHTML animation effects
Add dynamic Hypertext Markup Language (DHTML) effects, including animation and collapsible outlines, with the click of a button.
Accessibility checking
Select guidelines (including United States government section 508 guidelines) to follow and receive suggestions.

Add e-commerce functionality
Subscribe to the Microsoft bCentral™ Commerce Manager FrontPage Add-in to build a catalog of items to promote and sell online.
Apply customizable themes across the entire site
Apply different formatting options with 67 customizable themes. Each FrontPage Theme has been updated in FrontPage 2003 with its own look and feel, and each includes coordinated bullets, buttons, background, page banner, horizontal line, and font styles.
Browser and resolution reconciliation
Target specific browser or resolutions, or see how your site looks in various combinations of browsers and resolutions—including simultaneous previewing of multiple browsers.

Built-in FTP Support
An improved user interface—including intuitive visual prompts—makes it easier to use the Built-in FTP Support for publishing to servers that don't run FrontPage Server Extensions.
Custom Link Bars
Build custom Link Bars to link to pages on or off your site. You can create Link Bars from the Navigation View to be applied site-wide, or create ad hoc Link Bars and apply them anywhere.
Customize Data views
Either manually format data or apply a pre-built Data view, which enables you to quickly change the overall look of your data. Or, you can choose to customize the Data view to suit your needs.

Design-time layers
Support for design-time layers makes it much easier to work with multiple pieces of content that are stored in the same space and are made visible with code at runtime.

Dynamic Web templates
Added support for richer Web site templates enables you to create multiple templates, each containing multiple content regions, and apply these to pages in your Web site.

Enhanced color tools with browser-safe colors
Choose custom colors, pick a specific color from a graphic to add to your custom colors, or choose from a browser-safe color palette.
Enhanced drawing tools
Use enhanced drawing tools such as AutoShape pictures, shadows, WordArt drawing objects, and text boxes for attention-getting effects on your pages.
Image Tracing
Replicate site layout by placing a picture of how you want your site to appear behind the Design view. This is useful for working from an artist's rendition of your site.

Insert top 10 lists
Quickly insert top 10 lists that link to the top 10 pages on your site, measured by the number of visited pages, referring domains, referring Uniform Resource Locators (URLs), search strings, visiting users, and other criteria. These lists can be automatically refreshed when a visitor comes to the page.
Layout detection
Automatically identify layout tables with the Enable Layout tool, and have complete control over layer creation, placement, and visibility.

Multiple editor configuration
Choose which editor to use for particular content when you modify it. For instance, if you have several Graphics Interchange Format (.gif) files, you can open the photo .gifs with Adobe Photoshop and the diagram .gifs with Microsoft Visio®.

Page rulers and layout grid
Precision design and placement is a snap with helpful positioning guides such as page rulers and the background layout grid.
Split view
The new Split view helps you create and update sites more quickly by showing both the Code view and the Design view at the same time. Modifications made in the Design view automatically update in the Code view.

Features FrontPage 2002 FrontPage 2003
ASP.NET controls
FrontPage 2003 supports the preview of ASP.NET controls, enabling you to work with Microsoft Visual Studio®. Preview, reposition, and resize these ASP.NET controls, and use Microsoft IntelliSense® support for scripting to ASP.NET intrinsic controls so you can easily hook up, tailor, or even instantiate new controls.
Automatically fix links
When you rename or move a page or graphic, rontPage automatically updates all links that refer to it.
Clean up HTML
FrontPage 2003 enables you to clean up Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) when you publish. You can remove "white space" and clean up nonessential tags—such as comments and vector graphics.
Code snippets
Store blocks of code and insert them on pages from a library of code snippets. Code snippets can be anything, such as HTML or cascading style sheets, you insert in the Code view.
Consistently format with cascading style sheets
Use cascading style sheets to provide customized and consistent formatting on a page; or with FrontPage 2000, apply cascading style sheets to several pages or across an entire site.
Modify scripts created with HTML, DHTML, ASP, cascading style sheets, or XML
Use the HTML tab to view pages and scripts—including scripts created with HTML, DHTML, Active Server Pages (ASP), cascading style sheets, and Extensible Markup Language (XML)—and modify them directly.
Modify your pages in a WYSIWYG environment
Build your site by dragging images using a WYSIWYG ("what you see is what you get") editor—just as you can with publishing software.
Modify text files
Modify text files, such as JavaScript, XML files, or Extensible Stylesheet Language Transformations (XSLT) directly within the FrontPage editor, taking advantage of all the new code editing features without having to switch to a different editor.
IntelliSense for authoring Microsoft JScript® and Microsoft Visual Basic® Scripting Edition (VBScript)
The Code view provides IntelliSense technology to reduce errors in code writing. IntelliSense includes statement completion and shows the parameters available for the code you're writing, like Visual Studio does.
Monitor link performance
Create a report of broken or slow links, filter it to show what you want to see, and export the data to an HTML document or Microsoft Excel spreadsheet.
Personalize HTML formatting and preserve ASP source code
Use ASP source code preservation to modify content in pages that contain ASP code without disturbing the code itself.
Quick Tag Editor
The Code view provides IntelliSense technology to reduce errors in code writing. IntelliSense includes statement completion and shows the parameters available for the code you're writing, like Visual Studio does.
Quick Tag Selector
See the HTML tree structure below the insertion point in the user interface, and select or manipulate items in the Design view. The Quick Tag Selector lets you select the exact element you need.
Set permissions with subwebs
Set permissions for access to your site, or to subwebs of your site to implement the level of control you desire.
Smart find and replace
FrontPage 2003 provides basic find and replace functionality, as well as a rules engine for doing HTML searches. You can quickly search on and replace attributes or tags across your entire site, or on specific pages.
Use behaviors to author JScript
Author JScript without writing a single line of code. Just select your desired functionality, and FrontPage 2003 takes care of the rest.
Use the Microsoft Script Editor to write and debug scripts
FrontPage includes built-in support for advanced script modifications and debugging with the Microsoft Script Editor. Use it to add scripting language code—including ASP directly into FrontPage.

Working with Data
Feature FrontPage 2002 FrontPage 2003
Add Macromedia Flash content
Include Macromedia Flash content in your Web site by just dragging it into your work area. FrontPage 2003 provides a dialog box so you can set properties on a Flash movie by double-clicking it.

Automatic Web Content
Add Automatic Web Content to your Web site by inserting MSNBC headlines and weather forecasts, MSN® search, Expedia maps, and Microsoft bCentral™ small business tools. MSNBC content you insert is updated daily.
Connect to remote sites
The new Web Import dialog box simplifies connection types and protocols, how to deal with Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) connections or using passive File Transfer Protocol (FTP), and other connection settings.
Data view Web Part
Authoring the Data view is done on live data directly in the FrontPage 2003 Design view through the Data view Web Part. When you insert a Data view, you are actually inserting a Data view Web Part into your page.

Export and import Web packages
Export and import collections of Web pages and content from Microsoft Windows® SharePoint™ Services Web sites. FrontPage 2003 makes sure that all dependent files are included when you import or export.

XML support
FrontPage 2003 enables you to create and modify XSLTs for viewing XML data. It supports Microsoft Word or XML files and URLs that return XML, and it has all the tools necessary to handle and format XML data sources.

Finer-Grained Permissions
New Finer-Grained Permissions enable you to grant or deny access to users and groups through a "role-based" security model. There are now more roles to give you even more control over who accesses the content on your site.
Improved database tools, including the Database Results Wizard
Enables users without prior database experience to easily and automatically incorporate database queries directly into their pages.
Publish Office program files on your site
Use FrontPage to post your Office documents directly to a Web site as easily as you can save files to a hard disk.
Publish to FTP and WebDAV servers
Collaborate with others using the new site-building tools found in FrontPage 2003. File locking is provided on Web Distributed Authoring and Version (WebDAV) servers using WebDAV file locking. On FTP servers, file locking is supported through the use of .lck files.
Quickly set up a team Web site
Use Windows SharePoint Services to store, find, and share information, documents, and pages.
Rely on usage analysis reports
Better understand who visits your site by quickly finding which pages are getting the most hits and how customers find your site by using referring URLs in daily, weekly, or monthly reports that can be exported to HTML or Excel. You can also filter and chart these reports to see the exact information that you want.
Use database functionality to collect sales leads
Save or send data from easy-to-use forms to a text file, an e-mail address, or a database.
Web package template
Set up Web Logs and issue tracking lists and classroom sites with just a couple of clicks with pre-built Web package templates.
